This month we would like to remind everyone in the Okanagan that the Kelowna Holistic Market is on Sunday December 11th at the Laurel Packing House on Ellis St.

I have two new events to announce. These are fun and very affordable 10 days tours to Ireland for small groups of 10.  So come on your own or grab a few friends and join us in Ireland. The April tour is ideal for people who prefer not to be in a bus tour but have freedom during the day to explore. Low-Fat Smoked Salmon Spread

This spread is delicious on crackers or served with Belgian endive leaves for scooping. Or cut whole-wheat pita bread into triangles, bake until crisp, then sprinkle with kosher salt.

Orange Fruit Nut Truffles

This recipe is great in December and during the New Year celebrations. While walnuts are harvested in December, they are available year round a great source of those all-important omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are one of the best plant sources of protein. They are rich in fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, and antioxidants such as Vitamin E. Nuts in general are also high in plant sterols and fat - but mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (omega 3 fatty acids - the good fats) that have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol. Walnuts, in particular, have significantly higher amounts of omega 3 fatty acids as compared to other nuts. No one knows for sure how cranberries became associated with holiday feasts, but historians guess that it had something to do with the Native Americans, who used cranberries not only for food and medicine but also to make dyes for clothing and blankets. As far as healthy foods go, cranberries are at the top of the list due to their high nutrient and antioxidant content and are often referred to as a "super food." Not to mention, half a cup of cranberries contains only 25 calories! The possible health benefits of consuming cranberries include lowered risk of urinary tract infections, prevention of certain types of cancer, improved immune function, decreased blood pressure and more.

Roast Turkey Roll Stuffed With Fruit, Nuts and Camembert Stuffing

Holiday Dinner all rolled into one. There are about 32g of protein in a 4-oz. serving of turkey, making it a very good source of these essential amino acids. Just one serving of turkey provides 65 percent of your recommended daily intake of protein. Protect Yourself From Cancer. A little-known health benefit of turkey is that it contains trace minerals thought to aid in cancer prevention. Turkey contains selenium, which is essential for the healthy function of the thyroid and immune system. Selenium also has an essential role to play in your antioxidant defense system, helping to eliminate cancer-friendly free radicals in the body. Get Your B Vitamins. Turkey is considered a good source of vitamins B3 and B6, rated because of the density of these vitamins in the meat. A serving of turkey meat has 36 percent of the daily allowance of B3 and 27 percent of your recommended intake of B6. Benefit From Less Saturated Fat. Saturated fat is necessary for biological functions, hormone production, padding for organs and energy. While saturated fat is necessary for a healthy body, most moderately-active people need to avoid overindulging. Turkey has under 12 percent of the recommended daily allowance of saturated fat per 4-oz. serving. Choose Organic, Pasture-Based Turkey Grass-fed turkey raised under organic conditions convey the most health benefits. Grass-fed turkeys offer higher nutrition and are superior to birds given antibiotics or raised without access to natural pasture. Consider looking for a local, grass-based poultry farm when shopping for organic turkeys.

I am travelling for Christmas by car and ferry and suffer from motion sickness. Is there anything that I might try that may help me that is natural?


Ginger – Motion sickness or travel sickness can be no fun! Try grating a little ginger (or putting a few drops of liquid extract) into a glass of water or your water bottle. Add a few shakes of cayenne pepper, if you are daring. Drink it down and notice just how quickly your unhappy tummy begins to smile, once again. It’s also very good for morning sickness and is one of the few herbs safe to take during pregnancy.
Keep your eyes out the window and not in a book as reading can also be a trigger.

I recently read the new recipe book by Amanda J Sloan who is from New Zealand.  This book is for people looking for a Sugar Free, Gluten Free and Vegan Food. How does she do this? well this unique book only uses fresh fruit,vegetables, nuts, and spices as natural sweeteners. It is a diet full of enzymes for digestion, also using nutritious whole grains, beans, lentils, pulses and seeds. The only fat used is extra virgin olive oil which is my oil of choice. I found it is a great recipe book for detoxing the liver (as it uses Fresh produce), equalling a clean, energetic mind and body. The recipes were very easy to follow. This book is full colour, 92 pages, glossy cover and A4 and is available on Amazon
