What is Feldenkrais?

by Dracy Nybo, OKanagan, BC

Technically speaking, Feldenkrais® is a system of neuro-motor training and reconditioning that includes hands-on and verbally directed techniques to promote integrated movement. The Method concentrates on increasing the body’s efficiency through improving coordination.

In simpler terms, Feldenkrais® uses gentle, slow movements done within each individual’s comfort zone, to help you boost your capacity to move effortlessly.
The Feldenkrais Method® is for anyone who wants to reconnect with their natural abilities to move, think and feel. Whether you want to be more comfortable while on the job, sitting at your computer, or playing with your friends and family; Feldenkrais® has gentle lessons that can improve your overall well being.
The Feldenkrais® Method focuses on the relationship between movement and thought, increased mental awareness and creativity accompany physical improvements.
It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete who wants to improve your performance, or someone suffering from chronic pain, Feldenkrais® can help.

Classes and workshops utilize verbally directed movement sequences called Awareness Through Movement® lessons.   These lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradual evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. Awareness Through Movement lessons can be focused on a specific areas of the body; such as the neck and shoulders, or have more of an overall theme, such as relearning the easy, fluid movements you had as a child. These precisely structured movements integrate thinking, sensing, moving and imagining. Many are based on ordinary functional activities such as reaching, standing, lying to sitting, or looking behind yourself. Some focus on exploring the joints, muscles, and their relationship to posture.  There are literally hundreds of Awareness through Movement lessons for all levels of movement ability.

In individual sessions the practitioner uses a hands-on technique called Functional Integration®.  A Functional Integration session can help pinpoint how the everyday movements you are doing, can actually be causing pain and discomfort. Once these movements have been discovered, you can relearn how to properly move, run, walk and even sit, utilizing your body the way it was intended.

Guild Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner Sandra Bradshaw has her own practice in Kelowna since 1999. “I’ve seen approximately 5000 people using the Feldenkrais® method. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the ability of the human nervous system to reorganize itself and move effortlessly and elegantly when given the proper guidance.”

Feldenkrais will increase your capacity to move fluidly, without conscious effort. All of these new movements are integrated into your very cells and you spontaneously move freer and hold yourself better.
