TOP 10 ACTIONS to help the environment - April 2020

By Environment Care Articles

Earth Day is this month and OK In Health eMagazine would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for doing your part in keeping our Earth clean and beautiful on Earth Day and every day.

This articles is dedicated to our beautiful planet.

These are some simple top ten actions we could all do to help the environment.

1.   Smart shopping:  buy what you need, not what you want. consider renting and borrowing things that are seldom needed or purchase them from a garage sale or second-hand store.

2.   Simple savers: replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.  use aerators on faucets and shower heads.  weatherstrip windows and doors.

3.   Transportation alternatives: walk, cycle, car pool and use public transportation.  when driving, reduce idling and maintain correct tire pressure.  consider car sharing programs or renting.

4.    Food choices: choose local and organic foods that are in season and support local food producers.  eat less meat

5.    Washing & drying: wash full loads of clothes in cold water and hang to air dry

6.   Heating & cooling: for summer air conditioning, set your thermostat to 24C or 25C.  For winter heating, set your thermostat to 19C or 20C.  install ceiling fans and programmable thermostats.

7.  Parties: skip the paper plates, balloons, plastic table clothes and plastic cutlery and go for regular plates and reusable supplies etc.

8.   Bathroom basics: take short showers instead of baths.  close water taps while brushing your teeth.

9.   Careful cleaning:  choose natural, non-toxic cleaning products.  make simple, natural cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and water.

10.  Don't discard: donate, reuse and recycle items before throwing them into the trash.  harmful materials like chemicals, batteries, electronics, etc. should be taken to local hazardous waste depots or recyclers.

Wellness Tip
Correct Breathing While Lifting
Correct breathing during exercise helps keep blood pressure down and avoid unnecessary stress on the arteries. The National Institute on Aging recommends exhaling while you lift and inhaling as the weights return to their starting position. You should never hold your breath while lifting weights.

Recipe
Crispy Baked Asian Blackberry Chicken Wings
Category: Main Meals
Description: There are few occasions when I’d argue that “baked” rules over “deep-fried.” But believe it or not, a piping hot oven—and not a vat of bubbling oil—is the secret to the crispiest, crackliest chicken wings. And with just five ingredients and 50 minutes, you’ll be licking your fingers clean for every last taste of these Crispy Baked Asian Chicken Wings. Sound too good to be true?
I consider myself a bit of a wing connoisseur. Buffalo, chipotle, teriyaki, barbecue—you name it, I’ve winged it. While it’s hard to beat basic butter and hot sauce, I’ve turned to my favorite hoisin and blackberry jam glaze (of mini-meatball fame) to add a sweet and tangy twist to each crunchy bite. I guarantee these wings will fly off the plate. (You had to know that was coming…)

Much like spinach, raisins, apples, plums and grapes, blackberries are rich in bioflavonoids and Vitamin C, but other nutritional benefits include a very low sodium count and having only 62 calories to a cup. The dark blue colour ensures blackberries have one of the highest antioxidant levels of all fruits.

In Canada, blackberries are seasonal fruits and the availability of a fresh batch depends on whether you live in the North or the South. They make great jams.
