Salmon Can’t Speak Up, But We Can - November 2013

By David Suzuki, Vancouver, BC

The federal government knows how to help wild salmon. They’re just not doing it.

2,145 exhibits
892 public submissions
180 witnesses
138 days of hearings
26 million dollars

These numbers show the thoroughness of the Cohen Commission of Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River. For three years, the Commission gathered the most up-to-date science, listened to testimony from scores of expert witnesses and then developed 75 clear recommendations to help rebuild Pacific salmon populations.

A year has passed. Not one of the recommendations has been followed by the Government of Canada.

You can help change that.

Please send a letter to your Member of Parliament now. Tell your MP you want the Cohen Commission recommendations put into force without delay.

If you care about oceans, and have a few extra minutes, become a David Suzuki Foundation Ocean Keeper. You’ll get monthly updates about what’s happening in our oceans and what you can do to help.

Thank you for your interest and action on this critical issue. Only you can let decision-makers know what’s important to you.

Wellness Tip
Fast Food
Did you know that a plain fast food hamburger may be a better nutritional bet than a chicken sandwich? One plain patty, with bun but no cheese, provides about 260 calories and 9 grams of fat. A fried chicken sandwich has almost 500 calories and 23 grams of fat! When dining out, consider opting for plain items, such as burgers. Hold the cheese and sauces, or opt for grilled (not fried) chicken sandwiches with mustard instead of a rich sauce or mayo.
