Have you ever watched someone writing in their journal and asked – I wonder why or what they’re writing about? Here’s the thing. You already know people have everything they need within them to find their own answers, right? The tricky part though is how to find those answers or even to realize the answers are there. Here’s one of the keys. Writing! That’s right. Writing rights things. The people you see who are writing in their journal – they have already discovered this. Call it story-telling, journal writing, therapeutic writing, call it whatever you want. It doesn’t matter. It still has the same magical effect. Writing provides direction for people to go within and find their own answers, their own Truths because writing requires we sit still and listen. And when we listen we get in touch with our essence. Journal writing or therapeutic writing is writing to explore, examine, question, vent, analyze, discover, embrace, and honor who we are and what we live - our pains, our losses, our grief, our triumphs and joys. It’s writing that frees buried emotions and thoughts. It’s about what you do with what keeps you awake at night. It is what leads to an understanding of your experience and with this understanding comes the capacity to accept, acknowledge and create change. Since the beginning of time humans have had a need to share their stories. Even before writing existed humans left pictures and hand prints in caves or wherever they could in an effort to communicate. People have a need to share their experiences. We need to share, to tell our stories even if it remains within the pages of our journals. It’s more natural for us to express or to share than it is for us to hold on or hold back. Holding back is hard work and it’s also very dangerous. It’s like putting air in a balloon – if there’s too much it explodes, if there’s too little it shrinks – and you become at risk for both minor and major illnesses. A lot of illnesses or health related problems have a psychosomatic content. In fact research has proven this and I would wager the relationship between psychological events and illness is even higher then research shows. Everything is connected and interrelated much more than we care to admit. Writing helps us to connect with ourselves, to ask questions and find answers to our questions. Writing helps us stay healthy. So the next time you wonder what all the hype about journal writing is, pull out your own journal and start writing and you’ll soon become one of those who knows.
