Being Indigo

What is an Indigo - part one

This morning while reading a past posting in my blog, I laughed at myself as that particular entry showed so many of the traits of someone with Indigo energy. What is an Indigo? There are movies about indigo children, books, tons of information on the internet, however I am continually asked about it. I’ve written a series of articles in the hopes of bringing some clarity and tips to those with indigo energy and those who love them.

Indigo Children refer to a term coined by Nancy Ann Tappe in her 1982 book “Understanding Your Life Through Color,”.  She noticed children who were born with ‘indigo’ colour in their auras. She estimates that 97% of children under ten, and 70% aged 15-25 are indigo. The idea of Indigo children later became a bit more mainstream through the book by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. Their first book, ‘The Indigo Children’, became very popular and helpful to many parents and teachers, often with long wait lists at public libraries. There are now others out there as well as great workshops and books on healing repressed Indigo energy. More and more this ‘new age’ talk is providing the healing and answers that so many of us require.

What is being Indigo?

Wikipedia gives this definition:

“According to New Age beliefs Indigo children are highly sensitive with a clear sense of self-definition and a strong feeling that they need to make a significant difference in the world. They are empathic and can easily detect or are in tune with the thoughts of others, and are naturally drawn to matters concerning mysteries, spirituality, the paranormal and the occult, while opposing unquestioned authority and contradictory to convention. They are also said to feel a strong sense of entitlement. Some beliefs hold that they are often labelled with the psychiatric diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and also Autism, and that they become unsociable when not around other Indigo Children. They are also believed to be prone to depression and sleep disorders such as insomnia and persistent nightmares.”

I am over 40, therefore not the age of the typical indigo you will see in the books, yet I am, just my birth age is different. As a child my mother knew I was different and had to be raised differently than my older siblings, I did things differently and on my own time schedule. Reasoning worked with me, logic and love. I was lucky to have such a patient kind mother who looked outside the box for answers, saved me a lot therapy and workshops that I see so many other older indigo’s requiring. My ability to see things others didn’t was not stifled. Your indigo might be bright and full of purpose, an indigo in full power with their energy and mission honoured are a force to be reckoned with. An indigo who isn’t in control of their power can be difficult to handle. Most of these children/adults feel and read the energy around them. They know when you are out of truth; they know when you are out of love and integrity. When they stand in front of you, they simple know. They are here to shake up the existing paradigms. They are royalty (they know they are), and more.

In part two we will delve into deeper understandings of these brilliant and often misunderstood beings. Throughout the series I will share some of the signs, symptoms and resources in better understanding and guiding the indigo in your life.

SharonTaphorn’s bio
I am a Teacher, Healer, and Adventurer on this human journey. As an early indigo, I felt most at home with nature and animals. I have always been empathic and sensitive to the energies in my environment. Learning to work with these enhanced senses in the 3D world has been an interesting journey. I began to seek answers and clarity in books and libraries at an early age, my quest for a better understanding of why I could see, hear, feel and smell things others could not. This led to an exploration of many religions, beliefs and experiences, some dark, some strange. I learned the power of our thoughts, and working with other dimensional energies through classes on empowerment, workshops, books and life experience. A life threatening illness in my son when he was three led me to Nursing, which led me to alternative healing as my patients would tell me they felt better when I was working (I knew I had a healing touch and made a point of always touching my patients). And mother to a 22 year old multidimensional Indigo. sharon@playingwiththeuniverse.com
