Healing with Sound - May 2019

By Brenda Molloy, Kelowna, BC

In the Beginning there was a sound, a word, a tone …. This concept is similar in the stories of creation in most belief systems. The ancient sages in their classical books, songs and folklore gave reverence to sound. They taught that sound knows no borders. It resonates through all time and space. It moves deep into the cells of our physical being sending messages to our body, mind and soul.

Dr. Masaru Emoto, a renowned physicist, has conducted studies on the impact of words, music and messages on water. In his study he infused water, which was sourced from the same natural spring, with different thoughts, music and words. Some water vessels were energized with hope, joy, optimism, love, peaceful music, etc. While other vessels were energized with guilt, greed, anger, hate, unharmonious music, etc. The water was frozen and the water crystals were observed under microscopes and the study recorded that the water samples infused with positive stimuli created beautiful, balanced crystal patterns while the water infused with negative stimuli created discordant, unbalanced crystal patterns.

Western medicine teaches us that our bodies are comprised of anywhere from 68% to 89% water depending on our age, hydration, etc. If our bodies are comprised of so much water then what are the sounds or words we hear, plus our thoughts doing to our cells and bodies? Now ancient and modern science/medicine agree that sound has a healing effect on our bodies and minds. Sound healing is based on the idea that all illness or disease is a result of an energy blockage at some level in the body. When there is a blockage, the organ in question stops vibrating at a healthy frequency and thus it results in some kind of illness. Using sound and light one can break up or dissolve and release these blockages. Ultrasound has been used medically for almost two decades as a diagnostic tool while the baby is in the early stages of development. More recently ultrasound is being used to cleanse clogged arteries and to dissolve kidney stones.

Humming is one of the first sounds babies hear. The sight and touch of a baby sparks the human expression of humming, perhaps to soothe the baby or to entertain. Humming is the human version of a cat’s purr. The humming or purring soothes the nervous system, relaxes the muscles, stimulates the digestive juices and feeds the cells positive and optimistic signals. Try this: Close your eyes. Begin breathing in and out following your body’s natural rhythm. Don’t force the breath. Just be with it. On each exhalation release the “MMMMM” sound, as if you have just eaten something truly delicious. Continue this practice for 1-3 minutes. You have just given yourself an internal sound massage. Practice as often as you choose.

When we sing or chant we are utilizing the healing effects of sound. Singing and chanting not only send healing vibrations of sound throughout our bodies; they also permeate our cells with the quality and meaning of the words and tones that are used. Singing and chanting help to optimize the flow of energy within the body and enhance emotional well-being. For 3 days practice singing a happy song. It can be as simple as “Joy, joy, happy, happy, joy, joy!”, or a song that reminds your body of joyful or peaceful times in your life. After 3 days you will begin to feel a shift in your thoughts while you will spend more time feeling joyful and peaceful.

Throughout history reference has been made to music and its effects on the body, mind and soul. Music can rally the troops to war, connect us with the angelic realm, or soothe a baby to sleep. Joyful music lightens the heart. Music with nature sounds like water, birds, and wind help to balance our energetic system while providing a sense of peace and serenity. Fill your life with harmonious music and you will discover that you have more and more harmonious moments. Take time to be in nature to appreciate her music. The classical texts teach us that when we desire to reclaim balance within our body/mind we are to return to nature. Kick off our shoes. Allow our feet to touch the Earth. Close our eyes and listen to nature’s healing sounds.

On a physical level, the vibrations created by crystal or metal singing bowls resonate with our deepest, core vibration and penetrate our bones, our body fluids, and cells. On an energetic level, the vibrations move through the meridians, chakras, and energetic fields of our being. They remind our cells of their connection with all that is. The sound moves in and out of our bodies harmonizing our microcosm with the macrocosm.

The healing effects of tuning forks can be received by listening to them as well as by placing them on specific chakras and acupuncture points. In the Acutonics Healing System, tuning forks are used to vibrate the body with sound and to activate its energy systems. Sound is used with intention as we cosmically attune and harmonize our bodies. Each tuning fork is attuned to a particular planetary frequency based on its elliptical orbit.
Our body’s cells are immersed in the sounds of the planets and their healing energies. Tuning forks are placed on specific acupuncture points to call forth the unique healing energies of each point.

Sound healing can be practiced on your own or received from a qualified sound practitioner. The more we discover about sound and its healing effects on the body the more we appreciate the wisdom of the ancients.

Wellness Tip
Vitamin C for Smokers
Did you know that people who smoke need more vitamin C? Otherwise they maintain lower blood levels than those who don't smoke. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits and juices, broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables, and tomatoes. Everyone knows that smoking is unhealthy. But if you do smoke, make it your business to consume several vitamin C rich foods every day.

Description: Raw food is teaming with enzymes. Enzymes are the catalyst for every human function. We are born with a battery of enzymes but as we grow and continue eating the standard North American diet, the enzymes supplied by our body are used up to help run a nutritionally starved body. They need to be replaced. This is where a raw food diet comes into play. The more raw food you eat, the more you charge your enzyme battery and the better you feel.
