The Many Health Benefits of Resveratrol - December 2021

By Dr. Tamara Browne, Penticton, BC

Resveratrol is the active ingredient in red wine that provides health boosting and disease preventing powers.  This is why red wine in moderation is a healthy addition to a healthy lifestyle.  Resveratrol can be taken in a supplement form to greatly increase levels in the body without causing damage from excessive alcohol intake.  The most active form is trans-resveratrol and an optimal dose is 250 mg per day.  Resveratrol has the following health benefits:

  • Antioxidant.  Reduces cholesterol oxidation significantly, preventing cholesterol stickiness.
  • Promotes a healthy heart by protecting the heart and arteries from free-radical damage.
  • Promotes healthy blood pressure by relaxing and expanding blood vessels.
  • Protects brain cells from oxidative damage.
  • Activates a longevity gene called Sir2 which has been scientifically proven to extend life in many different micro-organisms and animals.  This gene is also present in humans.  The only other method of activating this gene that has been proven is caloric restriction.  Makes worms and flies live 30% longer, fish live 60% longer, and mice live 30% longer.
  • Improves Erectile Dysfunction by vasodilation.
  • Increases nitric oxide levels in blood vessel walls.  This is the method our blood vessels use to relax and expand, thus lowering blood pressure and angina (this is why the drug nitroglycerine works well to treat angina).
  • Increases excretion of bile acids and sterols.  This improves fat metabolism and removal.
  • Reduces atherosclerosis (plaquing and hardening of the arteries).
  • Reduces total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL (bad) cholesterol.
  • Reduces proteinuria (protein spillage in the urine from kidney disease).
  • Reduces inflammation.
