“Wheying” the need for protein this summer

by Nelson Narciso B.Sc., R.P.

With the arrival of summer comes a general feeling of wellness and a sense of health and vitality. As a result, many of us feel we can stop using key nutritional supplements that have the potential to benefit us year round. One such product is whey protein. Precision Whey Protein

What Sets Whey Protein Apart?

Whey is the most rapidly absorbed protein with the highest Biological Value rating (measure of protein retention in the body) and provides all the essential amino acids we need for our bodies to function properly. It also offers tremendous therapeutic benefits including anticancer activity, osteoporotic benefits, immune modulating effects, antimicrobial and prebiotic properties, antioxidant activity, cardiovascular protection, and intestinal support. Needless to say, no other protein offers nearly as many health benefits as whey.

Whey Protein and Exercise

Most of us are more active in the summer than any other time of the year. Outdoor activities like cycling, roller-blading, and walking are all great forms of exercise that allow us to take advantage of the summertime climate. As a result, the body’s demand for protein increases.

We not only use protein to build and repair muscle, but as much as 15% of the energy we require for exercise comes directly from protein stored in our muscles. If we don’t consume enough dietary protein to meet this demand our body “cannibalizes” muscle tissue for energy, causing a loss of precious lean tissue.

Whey also offers seniors unique advantages over other proteins. It has been shown to considerably slow down age related muscle loss.

Whey Protein and Weight Loss

Whey protein is unique from a weight loss perspective in that it can raise your metabolism. It has also been shown to possess mild appetite suppressant properties partially due to a protein called glycomacropeptide, naturally in whey.

One of the major drawbacks of many diets is that long before any significant fat loss occurs, we lose considerable amounts of muscle. This is especially true of calorie-restricted diets. It occurs because the body needs a steady source of energy and when that is not available, the body turns to muscle to supply this “energy deficit”. The loss of muscle results in a lower metabolic rate and an increased chance of storing body fat. Research has shown that whey protein can help minimize the amount of muscle lost while dieting without contributing to weight gain.

New Lighter Fruitier Whey Proteins Make a Great Summer Cooler

Traditional protein shakes are thick, heavy and hearty; not always the most desirable choice in the summer when most of us want something light. Fortunately, whey protein powders are now available in a fruity, juice-like option for a refreshing summer drink. Look for one made with CFM Whey Protein Isolate.  Not only are they higher in protein, they are virtually fat and lactose free, and usually have less than 2g of carbs per serving. Now quenching your thirst can also mean quenching your body’s need for high quality protein.
